Just Leave It Off
By Jacob Cohen | March 4, 2005
Lately I’ve been reading through a fair number of joke archives and humorous anecdote collections on the Internet. Today’s note is just a quick appeal to the authors of many of the “horror stories” about doing tech support or retail sales and having to deal with absurd customers.
They all seem to feel it is necessary to point out just how hard they were laughing at the person. Many stories will be about someone who plugged their computer into a potted plant, or poured sand into their monitor because they wanted a beach background for their desktop. The stories invariably conclude with the smug retail associate or tech support drone saying something like “I had to put them on hold because I was laughing so hard,” or “when the customer left the store, we all laughed for 20 minutes straight.”
The humor is in the actions of the customer, not painting a mental picture of how hard everyone was laughing when the scene occurred (if it actually did at all - a disturbingly large portion of these stories seem very contrived).
