Moving

By Jacob Cohen | April 26, 2005

My wife and I just moved into our first house. It’s a bit of a mess, with boxes and home improvement supplies everywhere. I discovered, in the process of repainting two rooms, an interesting fact. The number of electrical outlets in a room is not actually a constant, but fluctuates depending on whether you want to plug something in or repaint the room.

To make it easier to move various pieces of furniture around, I bought a few sets of those stick-on plastic pads. They actually work quite well. I have a solid wood writing desk that weighs about 250 pounds that slides pretty easily. It still takes a bit of effort, but doesn’t scratch the floor and beats lifting and carrying it, which requires two people. The most interesting thing about these pads is the catch phrase on the packaging: “Slide furniture as if it had wheels!” I am not sure what kind of wheels they are thinking of, but this seems like an amusing mixed metaphor to me. The probably want something more like “Slide furniture as easily as if you were rolling it on wheels.”

We decided to try out DirecTV instead of cable in our new place. However, we also went with a cable modem for internet access instead of DSL, since we already owned a cable modem and Verizon wanted us to sign up for a 1-year contract if we went with DSL. Since Comcast doesn’t have this requirement, it makes it easier to switch in the future if we decide we actually want DSL. Through virtue of the appointments both companies had available, they were both at the house doing their thing at the same time. It was a bit like West Side Story.
