Nopaste App Design, Revisited

Friday, March 30th, 2007

What is a Nopaste app?
A Nopaste app, or Pastebin, is a site where you can paste source code or other text and then share a URL so that other people can view it.
Mine can be found here: http://rafb.net/paste/
Origins of the idea
Mine was originally written as a response to seeing other pastebins in use on IRC. […]

Javascript Maze

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Last night I was thinking it would be cool to see if I could use HTML tables and Javascript to generate and solve a maze. I figured I could control the borders of the table cells to form the walls, then use a standard maze solving algorithm.
It turns out this is actually quite doable. This […]

Added a CAPTCHA Test for Comment Spam

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I’ve added a new test to prevent comment spam, using a CAPTCHA. This particular implementation is called Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam Image Plugin for WordPress
This was in response to the fact that Akismet doesn’t work effectively against comments that haven’t been previously flagged as spam. So if someone writes a script to see what they […]

Quicktime

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

So Apple’s automatic update software just patched Quicktime and iTunes on my system to the latest versions. Great.
Except that every time they do this, they ignore the fact that I told Quicktime to not install itself in my system tray. And they create another desktop icon and another quick launch shortcut.
Why can’t it just be […]

Added Google AdSense to Paste App

Friday, March 9th, 2007

For a long time I was against the idea of advertising on my site. I didn’t want to have flashing banner ads or “Punch the Monkey” games or anything like that getting in the way of what people were trying to do.
However, I’d like to at least help defray the cost of running the site. […]

iPod and iTunes Annoyances

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

So I’ve been using my iPod to listen to music in my car and at work. This is synchronized with my iTunes collection at home.
I also have iTunes installed on my computer at work, and I plug my iPod in to listen to it through the headphones i have connected to my computer.
The problem lies […]

Buying Music

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

There’s gotta be a better way than what iTunes does. I have bought loads of songs, and almost all of them in only a handful of genres (mostly trip-hop, electronic or metal with female vocalists), and they still do a pretty poor job of recommending songs. I get better results by looking at iMixes that […]

Widgets

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

This is a collection of the blog and web site widgets I’ve found from various other sites. I’ve made individual posts about most of these, but this is one place to find them all and provide an easier comparison of what they do and how they look.

del.icio.us Link Roll

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Here’s another one. I created an account over at del.icio.us. I guess I’ve been on a mission recently to find what else is out there as far as widgets you can put on a blog to bring your content from other sites onto your own.
