Buying Music

By Jacob Cohen | March 1, 2007

There’s gotta be a better way than what iTunes does. I have bought loads of songs, and almost all of them in only a handful of genres (mostly trip-hop, electronic or metal with female vocalists), and they still do a pretty poor job of recommending songs. I get better results by looking at iMixes that have songs I like on them, than in the “Just for you” section of the iTunes store.

Furthermore, there’s no way to browse through a bunch of ideas and track what you’re looking at. Everything is forced into a sort of tree of navigation with the back and forward controls serving as one of the only ways to get around. If I’m looking at an iMix, and I see four artists I want to check out, I have to go to each one in turn. This is easy enough, but what if one of the artists has iMixes linked to it that I want to explore? What if those link to other artists? Now I’m several steps removed from where I was originally, and I have to keep track of everything I wanted to see by hand.

I guess for now the best way is to just throw a song into the cart for every artist I want to look at, then I at least can get back to it later, and then prune the cart of all the stuff I don’t actually want when I go to buy it. There’s no Wish List, though, and no way to save songs for later if you want to buy some of the songs in your cart.

I’m also using BlueDot to keep track of some iMix URLs, but there really should be an easier way to do this.

    I don’t like iTunes either. Try last.fm.
