iPod and iTunes Annoyances

By Jacob Cohen | March 2, 2007

So I’ve been using my iPod to listen to music in my car and at work. This is synchronized with my iTunes collection at home.

I also have iTunes installed on my computer at work, and I plug my iPod in to listen to it through the headphones i have connected to my computer.

The problem lies in the way that iTunes always wants to synchronize your iPod to the local media collection. In the case of my work computer, I don’t have any songs on the computer itself, I merely use it to listen to the iPod.

The only way to get it to play songs off the iPod is to tell it I want to manually manage my collection. This, for whatever reason, seems to be a state that is set onto the iPod, not the computer, so the next time I plug it into my computer at home, it won’t automatically sync the music.

All I want to do is play the music I’ve bought wherever I go. I don’t see why iTunes has to make this so difficult.

Yeah, all of those settings for synchronizing and everything are set in the iPod. Because the iPod’s auto-sync functionality was probably designed to be used with a single computer, it’s become an extreme hassle to use it with multiple machines.

I keep syncing off on my iPod. not just because I’ve got more music in my library that would fit on an iPod (and more music on my system than would fit on any single portable music player), but because I’ve got a very specific subset of my music that I always want to have with me.

on the occasion that I forget some new album at home, I just scp the album to myself at work or wherever i am. The only time that that’s not sufficient is when I’m on the subway or something and I really wanna listen to the new track.

They should add the option to only auto-sync to a specified list of computers. And they should also allow you to listen to an ipod on a computer that you’re not syncing with rather than having the whole library greyed out.
