$65M Lawsuit over Dry Cleaning Mishap
By Jacob Cohen | April 26, 2007
According to a Washington Post article, a lawyer in Washington, D.C. is seeking $65M in damages from a dry cleaning business that lost a pair of his pants.
Apparently the amount was reached by taking the legal maximum in damages ($1500 per day), multiplied by the three defendants, multiplied by the 1200 days his pants have been missing. (This is $54M. I assume the balance is attributed to his legal fees and other costs)
The damages are to compensate for the alleged negligence and fraud on the part of the dry cleaners, who failed to deliver his altered pants on time. He was counting on wearing these pants to work, you see, and when they didn’t have them ready for him, he saw it as negligent and fraudulent.
I have to wonder, though, about a lawyer (who is also a judge) that places his ability to dress appropriately for work entirely in the hands of the corner dry cleaning business. Isn’t that negligence on his part? He was worried that he might be up against his credit limit, which is why he was having the pants altered one or two at a time. In other words, he did not know if he would be able to pay for the work at the time he ordered it. Isn’t that fraud on his part?
What, exactly, entitles him to any compensation (apart from the value of the misplaced pants) over this situation?

What’s he going to use the Chewbacca defense? I would love to be on this jury. The lawyer/judge is way out of line. I truly feel sorry for this hardworking couple. For them to have to endured this emotional and financial stress for more than two years is the crime.

Googling this guy turns up a divorce document that’s almost as scarey. I understand his tenure and reinstatement is up for review and some pretty powerful people are opposed, and recommending he be disbarred, as well.
This guy has a track record as an all around degenerate loser, his wife apparently was so tired of his mooching she kicked him out. He has a lot of experience freeloading. If he doesn’t win his lawsuit, I imagine our tax dollars will still support him, on welfare or unemployment. Nasty flipping blight on society.

This is the most severe case of abuse of our legal system. The judge is nothing more of a school yard bully and needs to be removed from the bench. The case would have long been dismissed had he not been a black man. We have come to a point as a country where we are so afraid of offending blacks that they literally have us by the balls. Enough is enough!

Hmm.. I haven’t seen anything (reported from a reputable source) that suggests the plaintiff’s race or gender has anything to do with the case.

The case itself has no merit for such an obscene compensation amount, in fact it should’ve never been allowed in a court to begin with. And the man filing the lawsuit apparently has no remorse for his complete and total abuse of this countries judicial system. And him being a lawyer / judge just compounds the the insult. If, by some warped way of thinking this man does receive any award for this case, I firmly believe that americans are going to have that “final straw” to complete the already strong disbelief most have in our countries government and its ability to keep the legal system to a FAIR, INTELLIGENT, and EQUAL standing for all. With an emphasis on intelligent. My personal feelings are that he should be disbarred, and a counter suit should be awarded to the dry cleaners. With some considerable compensation owed by him. With that said, I am certain the man has no conscience nor any real intelligence because this case alone has sparked an enourmous disgust for him by millions who do not even know him, myself included. I can only assume that those who do know him, family or otherwise can only feel the shame of their association to him.
